THE winner of the Wayne Sharpe Inter-School Benchpress Perpetual Trophy this year was O’Connor Catholic College.
Overall placings for 2013 were first O’Connor Catholic College with 87 points, second place Duval High School with 37 points, third place Inverell High School with 20 points and fourth place Yass High School with 19 points.
“I would like to congratulate all the lifters who participated in this year’s event and to thank all the schools who attended. I would like to specially thank Inverell and Yass High Schools for travelling great distances to be a part of the event this year,” Wayne said.
“Thankyou also to the school coaches Peter Harris from Duval High, David Lush from O’Connor Catholic College and David Anderson from Yass High School and Doug Hunt from Inverell High School as well as the competition officials Shane Bennet and Chris Bennet, Lucy Maynard and Brendan Laurie, all of whom made this year’s event such a tremendous success with their professionalism,” Wayne added.

Student lifters from Duval High School and O’Connor Catholic College both in Armidale, and from as far as Inverell High School, and Yass High School in the Southern Highlands presented a high quality field of competitors last Friday at the special anniversary 20th Inter-School Bench press Tournament held at Duval High School. Congratulations go to all the lifters for their fine performances, and especially to Kourtnee McFarlane from Duval High School who broke an Inter-School Bench record in the girls 64kg division.
There were many credible achievements with Brenden Lowe, Brennan Czinner, Ben Snell, James Frost and Henry Dunshea of O’Connor Catholic College and Nicholas Parker, Renan Gios and Harrison Jeffrey from Inverell High School all lifting equal to or in excess of their own bodyweight.
Female “Lifter of the Meet” went to record-breaker Kourtnee McFarlane (Duval High School), whilst the Male “Lifter of the Meet” went to Ben Snell (O’Connor Catholic College).
The Lifter Team Award Trophy went to Duval High School, followed very narrowly in 2nd place by O’Connor Catholic College and Inverell High School in 3rd place.
The Dip-Bar and Chin-Up Events were also very strongly contested amongst the boys following the main Bench Press event.

Organiser of the event, Paralympian and Commonwealth Games Powerlifter Wayne Sharpe, said that this year’s event celebrated 20 years of this competition. As such, a number of special activities and sponsors were added to this year’s program, along with a very special guest.
Current junior U/105kg divison National Record-holder, Jesse McEwen, from Byron Bay presented a very interesting and inspiring talk of how he got into Powerlifting along with his experiences at the recent World Powerlifting Championships held in Russia. Jesse went on to provide a thrilling demonstration of his bench press skills to the joy of competitors, spectators and officials alike.
Local business houses also came on board this year, providing additional prizes to the event.
Collins Armidale Bookshop awarded prizes to the female and male lifter who lifted the heaviest weight in competition. These prizes were awarded to:
GIRL: Kourtnee McFarlane of Duval High School.
BOY: Ben Snell of O’Connor Catholic College.
Armidale Sportspower awarded prizes to each school for overall placings.
