TWEED HEADS South Public School’s rugby league team are busy packing their bags for Sydney after advancing to the finals of the Legends Of League State Knockout.
The team, made up of Year Five and Six students and coached by Dave Nicholls, is now one of just thirteen left out of the six hundred sides from throughout NSW who entered this year’s competition.
It’s not the first time the school has made it to the finals – but it’s been a long time since they did. In fact it was back in 1989 when some of the current boys parents were at the school.
If you’ve never heard of it the Legends of League State Knockout is a seven a side Rugby League competition which helps to promote young football players’ skill development. It encourages students to have fun in a competitive team atmosphere whilst helping to inspire them to continue with the sport of rugby league and consider the possibilities for becoming a professional Rugby League player in the future.
The finals, in 21 August in Sydney, will be based around a round robin competition drawn on the day and will include time for players to meet and greet with current NRL players and NRL legends.
The Tweed Heads South team will represent the school, The Far North Coast and a League Legend.
Continuing their success on the sporting field the Senior Boys Rugby League team have also been on fire in the the NSW PSSA Classic Shield Knockout Competition this year.
The team has progressed to Round five of the competition without a point being scored against them.
Last Thursday, the team played Round Four against Lennox Head at the Tweed River High School Oval with the students demonstrating their skill and sportsmanship in a victorious result of 26 – 0.
In the next round Tweed Heads South Public School will play against Kingscliff Public School at Tweed River High, in what is expected to be an exciting game with both teams having Far North Coast representatives in their ranks.
