Fishing the Tweed

Peter Kyvetos and neighbours with a nice crab catch.

My dad said he’d never come out on a yak with me – he’s too old he tells me – this is not true, I ran into Kev a 75-year-old gent on a very small yak, he looked at me and told me that he reads this column every week and loves it.  Well Kev this week it’s been pretty bad, I had Friday off (it being a holiday in Qld and that’s where I work), so I fished Friday, Saturday and Sunday mornings, trying particularly hard on Sunday hoping to catch a nice fish for my dad’s fathers day BBQ.  The only guys I could see catching fish were the boys on the rock walls chasing black bream, everyone else I came upon using lures like me were having no luck either.
Friday morning I met Craig (Coz) Costigan at the jew hole near Seagulls.  We hit it pretty hard throwing all kinds of lures I finished up with one legal flathead and that was it, Craig ended up fishing the oyster leases while I went to the flats.
Sunday morning I thought I’d do a little cheating and go for a fish around the trawlers, they come in around 8ish and it’s a good place to be when they wash the decks down. I worked my way from the Ivory all the way around to where the house boats are moored, I didn’t get a bite, I had the right hear, my lure was a 1/40oz TT hidden weight jig head with a Eco Gear Pink Prawn which usually gets me lots of fish, not this time.
I put the bad fishing down to the incoming tide and the clear water, it’s just that it is so hard not to go out in the morning, the river is so inviting – I think the fishing might have been better if I’d left at midday.
Cheers.
