How things turn around. The water hasn’t quite cleared up yet but I thought I’d give a surface lure a try up at the end of my canal. First two casts, two legal bream and they were hungry, no mucking around, I saw the bow waves heading for my lure, then the big splash and I’m on. Gee they put up a good fight on light gear.
After catching a few bream I thought I’d head out to the main river to see if I could land a flathead or two. I ended up with a massive long tom, what a fight those things put up, but interestingly, while I’m fishing away I noticed several boats from the Tweed Heads Rowing Club heading in my direction taking up most of the river, which is cool, as there’s no-one around at that time, oh except me who was on a weed bank. I kept watching one particular boat with four ladies paddling away, Cathy, Renee, Tammy and Leone were their names. I was looking thinking they are going to hit that big island and I mean big. No-one was looking forward (ahead) and sure enough, I hear “Oh sh…t, I turn around and there’s all four girls stuck in the mangroves. It doesn’t sound funny but boy it was, the girls didn’t appreciate my humor when I said that was one of the funniest things I’ve seen, you know, paddling straight into an island. It took a few minutes for their coach Craig to find them, he just shook his head and told them to extract themselves from the debacle. I helped them out as much as I could, though my jaws were still aching from the laughter.
An hour or two later I paddled into the rowing club to check on the ladies’ wellbeing and Lachlan, one of their sons, told me they were fine and also gave me their names, only first names though.
What a weekend it was. Saturday I fished the rough seaway next to Gary of the yellow boat, we were the only guys out, even the trawlers turned around. Have a look at the photo of Gaz with that wave breaking in the background along the Fingal rock wall, gets you going alright.
That amazing Long Tom I caught on a surface lure was like catching a miniature marlin as it flew out of the water then darted off in one direction with amazing speed but, as I caught him in open water, it was all fun except when I had to get my lure and let him go, gee those teeth. Cheers
