Two of Australia’s top men’s hockey players were on hand recently to pass on some of their vast knowledge of the sport to the next generation of Tweed players.
Champion players Jamie Dwyer and Mark Knowles held a coaching clinic at the Barrie Smith Hockey Fields in Murwillumbah for 45 local players from all over the Tweed.
Dwyer was an Australia Hockey Olympic Gold Medalist in 2004, World Cup Champion in 2010, Commonwealth Games gold medallist in 2006 and 2010 and FIH World Player of the Year 2004, 2007, 2009 and 2010.
Mark Knowles was also part of the team that won gold at the Athens 2004 Olympics as well as the World Cup Championship team in 2010 and Commonwealth Games Gold in 2006 and 2010. Knowles was also named FIH World Young Player of the Year in 2007.
The duo are out on the road with their coaching clinics over the next few weeks.
Originally from Rockhampton, the players are out putting back into hockey around the state.
Tweed Border Hockey was lucky enough to have two kids’ coaching clinics on February 17/18, with around 45 kids taking part. A “coaching the coaches” workshop was also held, attracting 15 coaches who were able to ask questions and be shown some new techniques by the two Australian representatives.
The event was a chance for local players to get up close to two of the game’s biggest names and learn from these very knowledgeable players. It was also a good way to warm up before the new season, which starts late March (sign on During Feb/March) around the Tweed area.
Tweed Border has seven hockey clubs, including three along the Tweed Coast at Kingscliff, Casuarina and Pottsville.
