Kingscliff High School’s champion cricket team are out of the Davison Cup school boy’s knockout competition going down to Sydney school Hill’s High in a nail-biter at Reg Dalton Oval, Kingscliff on Tuesday.
The School was playing for a spot in the finals after making it to the final eight in the state.
It was the first time since the Dave Russell-coached 2002 Kingscliff team that the school had progessed all the way to the top eight in the state.
However coach Sean Lowrey said he was extremely proud of the efforts of the side which included players from Year Eight through to Year 11.
He said it had been a very well-balanced team with a lot of experience with several of the players already playing either A grade in the LJ Hooker League or playing with the Gold Coast Dolphins in the Brisbane competitions.
On Monday, despite the spitting rains and damp outfield conditions the side took to the field with the Sydney-based opposition, making 138 in their 40 overs. Alex Melville starred with the ball taking 6-22 on a well prepared Dalton wicket. The run-chase was led by Trent Arnold 30, Aiden Kemmel 26 and Jesse Harrington 29.
The side lost the game in the final over of the day after coming oh so close – finally losing by just three runs – finishing the 40 overs at 9-135.
