Western Australian Jake Stone came home strongly to take out the Queensland Association of Bodyboard Pro at Duranbah Beach at the weekend.
The final day of the QAB Pro was surfed in clean one-metre waves at Duranbah and the action was red-hot.
Eventual winner Stone (WA) saved the best until last when he pulled a “Double-Roll” that had the whole beach frothing, to finish with an incredible 17.50 heat total (out of 20.00).
He finished just ahead of defending champion Hayato Enokido (Japan) who also posted two 8.5s to tally 16.00.
“ I’m stoked,” Stone said.
“There we some sick little rip-bowls and wedges to launch off today.
“I am starting this year fitter and with a clear head so I am amped. Hayato almost got me, he surfs good but I’ve been waiting to pull out a double roll in competition for a while and, well…, it worked for me today.”
The Japanese rider used his trademark ARS (air-roll-spin) to full use on the day and was content with second.
“ I’m happy,” he laughed.
Third place went to local rider Joe Clarke; and Sunshine Coaster Lauchie Cramsie was fourth.
Cramsie was one of the standouts of the whole event and has firmly stamped himself amongst the best riders in Australia.
In the Drop Knee final, Dave Winchester threw tail and blasted lips to walk
away the winner ahead of Aden Kleve,
with Zac Sonner (Qld ), Dane Pope (Qld) fourth.
IBA Australasia general manager Terry Mckenna said overall it was an awesome event with some great waves and the QAB will now begin work all over again to secure more support for next year’s event.
“D’bah is a perfect sport for bodyboarding and this was just the kick-start we needed for the 2011 Rebel Sport Pro Tour,” he said.
The crew has now all packed up and headed South to the NSW Central Coast for the 3-Star Soldiers Beach Pro which kicked off on Wednesday.
