The dynamic duo of Libby Beasley and Kay Ireland will tell you they’re happy to just play a fun game of golf together. This attitude towards their golf has landed them with their second consecutive Shirley Hewitt Memorial Jug, the most prestigious women’s golf tournament in the region.
One hundred and forty players took to the Armidale Golf Course on Sunday, coming from all over the State and Australia to contest the Jug. Thanks to the ground staff and the recent rains, the course was at its best.
Libby and Kay were amongst the last to tee off and the result was not known until they reached the clubhouse. Runners-up Jane McCardell and Anne Yuille, who had finished their round earlier, waited nervously for the other teams to finish.
“We went with the intention of having a lot of fun,” said Kay Ireland.
“We just thought we did it last year, we don’t have to do it this year, we can just go out and enjoy it,” said Libby Beasley.
“After the front nine, we thought we didn’t have enough points.
“Suddenly something happened on the last nine and we managed a few good scores.
“We are really comfortable in each other’s company,” said Kay.
“We don’t put any pressure on each other.”
