Can’t resist the lure

Richard Creighton, with Ballina in the background, yaks ready to go.

Fishing on the Tweed By DAVID SOLANO

I thought we’d do something different again, so the yaks were loaded on Friday night, filled the car with our fishing gear then very early on Saturday morning we headed to Ballina to fish for jew fish at a place called the “porpoise wall”.  After a quick stop at the tackle shop to buy some heavier leader we pulled in next to the yacht club, got the hobies ready and headed straight over to the wall.
I thought the current on the Tweed River was pretty strong, well the current on the Richmond on the run out is so strong I could only just peddle against it.
I was fishing in around 30ft of water using a seven-inch gulp minnow, rigged on a TT 3/4 oz 7/0 jig head, with this heavy rig it was easy to get to the bottom. The trick with these lures once on the bottom is to jerk the lure violently upward, then let it go down again, this method will usually invoke some interest from any hungry fish.
We both caught a lot of little fish but no big ones. Stayed out for about five hours and when I returned home I could barely walk, my legs were that tired.
Sunday on the water I bumped into Craig Costigan who was doing something I don’t often see on the Tweed, he was fly fishing for bream using flies that he had made and he was successful too, well done Coz!
