Jets too strong for Hornets

The Bilambil Jets emerged victorious against a disappointing Cudgen Hornets side on Sunday at Ned Byrne Field, Kingscliff, in the Bycroft Rugby League competition.
Even the dismissal of Jets prop forward Jay Lynn, for allegedly running some distance and throwing punches in a wild brawl, did not stop the Jets engines from revving along smoothly.
The only real highlight for the Hornets came in the 20th minute when centre Jake Sands made a brilliant break and ran some 50 metres outsmarting the Jets’ defence before putting supportive winger Shannon Reen over under the posts.
Both clubs supporters appreciated the outstanding effort. But if the Hornets thought they had been given a sniff of a comeback the Jets had other ideas as winger Jack O’Brien scored out wide to take the Jets to the break, up by 18-6.
The second stanza saw no joy for the Hornets as the well-drilled Jets’ defence continually punished the Hornets’ attack, which showed little imagination and was at times pedestrian.
As simple errors crept into the Hornets’ game the Jets finished the stronger, running out comfortable winners by 34-12. No-one tried harder for the Hornets than winger and captain Matt Petersen, hooker Myles Donnelly and 5/8 Brock Foggo who continually asked questions of the Jets’ defence.
The Jets’ halves combination of Jake Nash and Paul Rolls dominated the match with their deft passing and kicking.
The Hornets Reggies suffered their second defeat of the season by going down to a much more enthusiastic Jets outfit by 20-6.
The early loss of 5/8 Josh Alcorn to injury disjointed the Hornets who were best served by prop forward Jacob Orr and fellow forwards Fletcher Wyver and Kane Stannard.
To kick off the day’s proceedings, the under-19s turned in another below-par performance and went down by 34-10. None tried harder than prop forward Nick Clark who once again was the best performer in a disappointing team effort.
