Waratah Falcons goal-keeper Carly Paron put her body on the line with a match-winning performance against arch-rivals Casuarina in the Tweed Border Women’s Hockey match at Barrie Smith Oval, Murwillumbah at the weekend.
Paron withstood some tough Casuarina defence while at the other end Tara Rochester scored a double to give their points the win over the Tweed Coasters 2-1.
Former Australian representative Kim Small scored Casuarina’s only goal.
A Lorelle Morrissey hat-trick steered Kingscliff Sirens to a 5-1 victory over Murwillumbah in the other women’s game at the weekend.
New-comers, Central Comets kept their un-beaten run alive in the men’s Hardcourt Hockey League competition on Friday night in Murwillumbah.
The competition leaders were in a goal-scoring mood with six shots finding the back of the net against fellow new-comers East Coast Sharks. The Comets won 6-2 in a high-scoring game.
While men’s hockey power-houses Waratah Bobcats came back from last week’s shock defeat at the hands of the Comets last week with a hard-fought 3-2 win over the Kingscliff Stingers
Next week will see the start of the Women’s J.H. Williams Hockey League with the Tweed teams combining with Lismore teams in one big giant competition – as they have for almost a decade.
The coming week will also see the Murwillumbah Hockey Club host a Pink Day and night to try and raise money for breast cancer.
This event will be held at the main hockey complex at Brisbane street Murwillumbah Friday night 10 May. The night will start with the under-16 boys matches followed by the Hardcourt Hockey League games in the men. At 8.25pm competition leaders Central Comets come up against the Kingscliff Stingers, while in the earlier game at 7pm Waratah Bobcats play the East Coast Sharks – both these promise to be cracker-jack games.
The Comets will be wear pink socks and the Stingers pink head bands. On Saturday 11 May the women’s matches will see the Waratah Falcons, who will be wearing pink singlets, up against the Casurina for the second week in a row at 6.25pm.
The second women game at 5pm is between Kingscliff Sirens and Northern Star and in the first game, at 3.35pm, Murwillumbah, who will be in pink, up against East Lismore.
We are all hoping to see plenty of supporters on both Friday night and Saturday come down to watch and wear something pink, and donate to try and raise money for this worthy cause.
Well done to the Murwillumbah hockey club for putting this on.
