A massive week for archery in the region concluded on Saturday with the final field events in the 2012 National Youth Archery Championships decided.
Local archer and member of the NSW team Brendan Howe who earlier in the week won gold in the target Recurve event and bronze in the Clout also came away with another medal winning the field event on Saturday. Howe’s outstanding performance throughout the championship has secured him a place on the Australian Junior team that will head off to Rotorua, New Zealand, in April to compete in the Trans Tasman Challenge against the New Zealand Junior team.
Holly Giles in her first major event was the only other local archer to medal coming second in the Compound Bow Intermediate Women. Local archers Madden Rayner and Yjere Matikainen also performed extremely well in their first competition.
Dennis Carson from Armidale Archers who hosted the event was pleased that the championships went off without too many major issues.
“It has been a great event and a real honour to host the event,” said Dennis.
“The feedback that we have received from competitors has been excellent, they were very impressed with the facility out at the University and with our field course.
“We have had a lot of people come up to us, especially out at the university and ask us about archery, we expect to see a bit of interest in the sport, as we usually do when we get a lot of media coverage, it is great for our club.”
This event could not have happened without the hard work and commitment from everyone at Armidale Archers who have given up their time to put on a fantastic event.
