Possession the key in Robb’s victory

Robb winger David James was outstanding against Albies.
A first half romp of tries for Robb College set up a convincing win over St Alberts College 35 to 19 in round nine of the New England Rugby competition at Bellevue Oval on Saturday.
A healthy crowd was on hand to watch the college rivals battle it out, and from the first whistle Robb were all over a lack lustre, mistake riddled Albies.
Robb coach Gordon Williams was pleased with his teams’ dominant performance especially in the first half.
“We kept the pressure on in the first half with four converted tries to one,” said Gordon Williams.
At half time the score was 28 to 5 and with nothing to lose Albies threw everything at Robb however Robb’s defensive game held tight. The final nail in the coffin for Albies was courtesy of Robb player Jake Cutcliffe who scored about 10 minutes from full time to secure the win.
“They really put some pressure on us in the second half, scoring two tries,” said Gordon.
“In the first half we had about 65 percent of the ball and in the second half we did a lot of defending as they really upped the ante.
“Our defence was strong but to Albies credit they stopped us playing the game we wanted, getting stuck right in.”
Robb had a simple game plan leading into the match, which was to hold onto the ball and not kick it away unless an opportunity presented itself.
“We scored from one of the kick throughs with a favourable bounce and strong chasers to score,” said Gordon.
According to Gordon Albies are not as strong as they were last year and have lost a bit of depth and quality in their first grade side.
“Albies had a couple of their first grade starters out and they lost a couple to injury during the game,” said Gordon.
“They certainly aren’t the side they were last year.”
Robb winger David Jane had a strong game scoring a try and setting up another. Back rower Tom Kent at number 8 had an impressive game recently moving from blind side flanker. Tight head prop Tom Chaffey was strong and the number 10 Henry Noble also performed well controlling the game well.
Try scorers were David James, Josh Carter, Tom Kent, Jake Smith and Jake Cutcliffe who also converted five tries.
Next week Robb play the top of the table team UNE Barbarians at Bellevue Oval on Saturday in what is shaping up as a cracker of a game.
