THE ‘Nation of Origin’ rugby league tournament is being held today and Thursday in Dubbo with 24 teenagers from Armidale contesting the inaugural event.
An initiative of PCYC NSW as part of NAIDOC Week celebrations, the two-day competition involves 18 teams of under-16 boys and girls from across the State, each representing their traditional Aboriginal nations and totems.
Member for Northern Tablelands Adam Marshall, farewelled the players and coaching staff this morning. He congratulated Armidale Police and Armidale PCYC for combining forces with local volunteers to put together two teams, known as the Anaiwan Echidnas, to contest the tournament.
Mr Marshall said the teams and support staff had raised thousands of dollars to get to Dubbo and cover the expenses involved in the tour.
“The Armidale community has been amazing in its support of this wonderful initiative for our Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal youth,” he said.
“Whether they bring back any silverware or not, the players have already achieved a great deal by being part of the teams and working together to have an opportunity to play in the tournament.
“I commend the local Police and the PCYC on the work involved in making this happen and I’m sure the 24 young people will be better for the experience gained on and off the field.”
Mr Marshall acknowledged and thanked New England Medicare Local, Tablelands Community Transport, Armidale Youth Assist, Armidale Sportspower and Armidale Junior Rams Rugby League Football Club for their support of the Anaiwan Echidnas.
“Without this support it wouldn’t be possible for the opportunity to be offered to the young people and I thank them on behalf of everyone involved,” he said.
“I wish all the players every success in Dubbo over the coming days and look forward to hearing about their results.”
