Tapped Into The Waves By TERRY “TAPPA” TEECE
GREAT results over the weekend for local surfers in both South Africa and South America, with some moving right up the ratings on their quest to qualify for the elite World Championship Tour.
Mitch Crews went through to the semi-finals of the WQS Prime Mr Price Pro in South Africa, only being defeated by eventual winner Julian Wilson. Crew’s third place now moves him up to 27th on the one world rankings, and within the top 10 surfers who are not in the top 22 of the WCT. Crews is now in a good position to qualify for the tour in 2014, but will still require some more good results in the second half of the year to realise his qualification dream.
Crews brought his big match temperament to an all-important semi-final clash against Wilson. Producing a full repertoire of manoeuvres, Crews was unfortunate not to find the near perfect score needed to beat the polished and more experienced Wilson.
“I’m really happy to get all the way to the semis and to surf against Julian,” Crews said.
“Jordy and Julian have been standouts all event and there’s not much you can do when they’ve got you. This is a big result for me and I hope to continue my run and get a bunch more results to make the tour next year.”
Meanwhile in Mexico, Wade Carmichael, originally from Avoca, but now resides in Kingscliff, has won the Association of Surfing Professionals 4-Star Surf Open Acapulco over Californian Tim Reyes in solid six-to-eight foot waves at the powerful beachbreak of Playa Revolcadero.
Stop number three of six on the men’s ASP North America Series, the second annual Surf Open Acapulco saw surfers take on a vast array of conditions beginning with small high-performance wedges and would finish on the final day in pulsing barrels. The Australian would go on to lead the heat throughout its entirety, securing Carmichael’s first major ASP men’s event victory.
“I started off the way I wanted to, it worked out and I’m so frothing,” Carmichael said. “I had seen the conditions changing in the last semi and I picked my spot. The first wave came in the final and it was right where I wanted it to be. That started it off perfectly. It kind of went pretty slow and Timmy (Reyes) didn’t really get very much and I’m just frothing. Thanks to everyone at home for all of the support.”
Carmichael, who finished fifth on the 2012 ASP World Junior Tour, is embarking on the men’s qualifying series full-time this season and today’s victory marks the best result of the young regular-footer’s budding career.
“This is my first year doing the ‘QS and I’m so stoked to get a win,” Carmichael said. “My goal was to get in to the Primes after the cut-off and this should probably do it.”
Meanwhile the “Midget Magic was still on in Mexico with Brent Dorrington getting to the semi-finals, and well and truly enjoying his time in Mexico. He was eliminated from the event by eventual runner-up Reyes, but will now be looking for another result to push himself well into the top 100. Carmichael is now in 68th position.
BYRON GRAB THE WIN AT THE SARCOMA TEAMS EVENT
Byron Bay Boardriders took out the first NSW Sarcoma Teams Challenge at Cabarita on Saturday. Competed in great spirit, it was a great event, with surfers from Kingscliff, Cabrita, Byron, Snapper Rocks, and Duranbah Boardriders taking part.
The event was held to raise funds and awareness of the cancer Sarcoma, with funds going to the Hannah’s Chance Foundation.
It was a great fun time for one and all, and Byron Bay grabbed first, Snapper second, Dbah third, with Kingscliff and Cabarita equal fourth. The event will be back next year, even bigger and better.
ROXY PRO BARRITZ UNDERWAY
The sixth of eight stages on the ASP Women’s World Tour is under way – with everything to be decided by Sunday 14 July.
The surfing action will be great on the beaches of Barritz, but most of the news has been about the sexy video trailer which has gone viral on the internet. Not one wave is surfed in the promo, where a very good looking blonde girl gets out of bed, puts a shirt on, takes it off, has a shower, then get in the car and paddles into the ocean … lots of body shots but no surfing and has had a lot of commentary, both good and bad on the web.
To me it looks like an advertisement for mobile phones, a car company, and DHD, which maybe a clue to the very attractive blonde girl who is the model in the film clip. As in the toothbrush adds, like the dentist, we do not see her face, but I, just guessing, think she is a very well-known surfer from around these parts … check out the clip for yourself, and make up your own mind, but it cannot surely be about surfing.
