They may be older than a lot of their opponents but that isn’t slowing the Kingscliff Sea Wolves down.
The side, which won the Football Far North Coast lower grade ANZAC Cup trophy a couple of weeks ago, has bounced back to the regular Division three competition with an impressive 2-1 victory over Nimbin Headers at Walter Peate Oval, Kingscliff on Saturday.
And they are hoping to continue on their winning way against the hot and cold Byron Bay when they road trip to the Bay this weekend.
Team manager Col Ashton said Byron have so far been the easybeats of the competition but the Sea Wolves, whose ages range from their early 20s through to their 50s, won’t be taking them lightly.
“Byron Bay has been getting hammered but you never know in this competition,” he said.
“It is really a week to week prospect, Uki and ourselves are the only one team club’s in this competition, everybody else has sides playing in a number of grades.”
He said that meant that the others had plenty of resources to call on if they needed them.
However, the Sea Wolves do seem to have one advantage over the others – good drainage on their ground.
“We are the only team that has played all of its games,” Col laughed.
“Uki have only played two. For that reason it is actually hard to work out how we are going in the competition.”
But judging by their impressive 2-1 win over Nimbin Headers last weekend, they aren’t doing too badly. The home team dominated the game from early with centre half Mark Briggs and left half Peter Howlett scoring to put them 2-0 up at half time. Nimbin got an early goal in the second half but solid defence from the Wolves kept them from finding the equaliser.
