The Tweed District is currently producing a number of top junior tennis players and one primary school, in particular, is playing a starring role.
Cody Atkinson, 15, Caleb Maxted, 14, and Brody Luc, 12, all attended Banora Point Primary School and started their tennis on the school tennis court under the guidance of coach Paul Shacklock.
All three boys are currently ranked No1 in the District (and NSW Top 15/25/40 respectively) for their age and recently all three boys made it through to their respective U/16, U/14 & U/12 Boys finals at the Tweed District Junior Open Age tournament held at Tweed Heads in January.
Cody and Caleb also won their respective doubles events and Brody was a runner up is his doubles event.
Tweed District Junior Tennis President, Peter Luc was full of praise for the trio.
“Each of the boy’s event were filled with top class junior players from Sydney to Nth Qld and included a national champion plus a large number of state and regional rep players,” he said.
“To attain these results and rankings against such high quality fields is a fantastic accomplishment from each boy”.
“It is a credit to the school and Paul to have such a wonderful achievement across all of the junior boys age groups.
“Through the school’s support for tennis, Paul’s patient coaching methods and making it fun for students, it shows that the school and Paul have a winning formula and I think it is a first for the District that one primary school and coach have achieved this.”
Banora Point Primary School principal, Dean Files, added ” It is excellent news regarding our local tennis players. I am delighted with the success of the boys and agree that Paul is a wonderful coach and we are lucky to have him”.
