After holding onto a 16-nil lead throughout three quarters of the game against Robb College, St Albert’s College managed to squander that lead, narrowly holding on to claim victory 16 to 14 in a nail biter at Bellevue Oval on Saturday.
The traditional rugby rivals gave their parents something to be proud of during the annual Parents weekend. The game was played in great spirits, with hundreds of parents and friends crammed into the ground for the clash.
“It was a funny old game, with the dominance of the game swaying backwards and forwards between the two teams,” said St Albert’s coach Greg Wood.
“Robb probably had the better of the first ten minutes or so and then we seemed to enjoy much better field position and put some points on the board.
“With about eight minutes to go, we were still up 16-nil. However, Robb scored two late tries and they put a lot of pressure on us, but we managed to hang on.”
Greg Wood believes that field position was what made the difference on the day, with Albies camped in Robb’s half for the majority of the game.
“We deployed a smart tactical kicking game that enabled us to keep a lot of pressure on Robb and keep us down their end of the field and force some mistakes which we capitalised on,” said Greg.
“Having said that though, they put a lot of pressure on us for no result; they did have some bad luck as well.”
Strong performances by Albies players, captain Sam Clements, hooker Harry Pye and winger James Perrett led the way for a strong performance from the rest of the team.
