Marlins spear debut success

It may be the Marlins first season but they already have their first silverware with reserve grade clinching the 2012 Premiership trophy at the weekend. IMAGE: NOLAN WHITE

It was a goal feast at Arkinstall Park on Saturday when Tweed United F.C. took on Burleigh Heads in the Gold Coast 1st Division.
‘A’ Grade won 8-5 and Reserve Grade won 4-1 over teams that sit in 3rd and 2nd in their respective comps.
The Marlins got off to a shaky start when they conceded an early goal but hit back soon afterwards with two of their own.
Burleigh hit the lead before half-time with another two goals and went to the sheds up 3-2. Tweed United hit the field running in the 2nd stanza embarrassed about leaking three soft goals in the first half. Two goals early in the half gave Tweed the ascendancy, which they held for the rest of the match to come out comfortable winners with a crazy scoreline of 8-5. Goal scorers were Alex Thelwall (wonder boy) got another 4, Josh Taylor (2),Matt Noble (1) and super sub Andrew McMullen with a late winner.
Best for Tweed were Josh Taylor, Michael Kolovos, Adam Karlos , Matt Noble and Alex Thelwall.
Reserve Grade made it 17 in a row with a comfortable 4-1 win over 2nd placed Burleigh Heads and later accepted newly amalgamated Tweed United F.C.’s (Tweed Heads and Banora Point) first silverware as 2012 Premiers.
Goal scorers were Rob Letham (2), Chris Pirlo and Aaron Maingay. I must say nothing tastes better than Beer slurped out of a Premiership Trophy.
If the boys can beat Murwillumbah next week they will be the only team in all Football Gold Coast competitions to win all their home and away matches, quite an achievement.
Next week Tweed United F.C. travel to Murwillumbah for a top of the table local Derby, and if (fingers crossed) semi final contenders Griffith Uni can beat Murwillumbah on Thursday night ‘A’ grade will be playing for a Premiership Trophy of their own. ‘A’ grade Kick off at 3pm on Saturday and reserves at 1, so next Saturday arvo pack up the family and get to Mur’bah to cheer on the Marlins in what are sure to be two hotly contested matches.
Till then… go the Marlins.
