New England Bowls With Richie Clutterbuck
PLAYING on his home greens, Todd Fuller (City), retained his district champion of champion singles title with a dominate display in all of his matches.
In his first match he defeated Guyra’s champion Braden Sole 31-11 before defeating Ex-Services Mal Ahoy 31-10 in a semi-final. His opponent in the final was Glen Innes champion Dennis Williams and he had to be happy with his second district runner-up result this year.
Dennis led 6-1 early and looked in fine touch before Todd levelled at 8-all. From that point on, it was all Todd and he raced to a 25-8 lead following four shots on each end 16 and 17. The green was running extremely well and it was Todd who managed to handle the conditions better. He will now go to Wee Waa on the weekend 21-22 September for the zone finals.
In other first round matches, the match between Mal Ahoy (Ex-Services) and Peter Leggatt proved to be a real cliffhanger.
Peter started in great touch and led 15-1 and then 25-13 before Mal staged a remarkable comeback to win 31-30. Walcha’s Kyle Goodwin also played well in his match against Bendemeer’s Gary White to win 31-11 before losing his semi-final to Dennis Williams 31-26.
This weekend, club pairs champions will head to Guyra for the district finals.
District meeting
AT the district meeting on Saturday all clubs were informed that they must forward their pennant nominations and dates for next year’s carnivals and special days to either Mike Sherar or myself urgently.
The pennant nominations must be in as the zone will meet in October to decide venues and dates.
This weekend the Rookies event will commence and players should check the royal web site for details regarding playing venues and times. The Royal has extended the closing date for entry into the club challenge competition until 15 August so if club’s still wish to enter they must do so by that date.
Coca Cola pairs
ONLY four spots remain in the Coca Cola major minor pairs at City on 14 September and a list of teams who have entered is on the board at the City club.
With most club’s preparing for their annual meetings it’s time for those people who wish to serve on the various boards to contact their club and obtain details regarding Director’s roles on boards. Also think about your selectors. Vote for the best person for the job, not because he or she is your best friend.
