It’s not all hit and miss

Fishing on the Tweed By David Solano

THERE were a lot of holiday makers on the water over the weekend, particularly on Sunday there were boats and kayaks everywhere.

I spoke with a lady who had organised 12 other yak fishos to come down from Brisbane for a day of fishing the Tweed and I have to say it was a sight to see all those yaks together having fun, chatting, fishing just having a good time.
It’s pretty funny this fishing caper, at one spot I was about 20 feet away from a boat that had five people fishing with bait, they were catching a lot of small bream and that’s about it. I on the other hand was getting a just legal flathead on almost every cast, I had on a gulp minnow in the disco prawn color with a 1/12oz TT jig head smeared with pro lure scent (bloody tuna).
It wasn’t the bait and lure thing – it was where they were casting that made the difference.
I was casting up towards the shallow water and slowly letting the current take my lure into the deeper water while lifting the rod tip occasionally to impart action onto the lure. They were casting into the deep channel where the water was moving fast and where there’s no bait or food on the bottom.
So think a little more about where the fish might be for better catches. Cheers.
