Shooters go the distance

TARGET rifle shooters from The Armidale School were placed second at the annual Fiona Reynolds Memorial All-Schools target rifle shooting match, held in Sydney on Saturday.

TAS fielded three five-man teams in the competition against a total of 12 teams from Sydney Boys High, Shore School, Scots College, Newington College and New England Girls’ School.
The TAS Gold team consisting of Tim Druery (captain), Will Murray, Sam Johnston, Alec Munro and Hugh Morton placed second behind a Sydney Boys’ High team.
“The match was shot in clear sunny conditions with a difficult ‘fish-tail’ wind coming from behind the shooters,” MIC Trevor Thatcher said.
“After shooting the 300-metre and 500-metre ranges, TAS was placed second, 10 points behind Sydney High,” he said.
“However a strong performance by the team at the 600-metre range resulted in TAS reducing the margin to four points, and second place.”
Hugh Morton, Year 9 student from TAS was placed the second best individual shooter with a score of 145 with 11 centre bulls-eyes (possible 150).
Hugh’s wind coach was Sam Johnston who was King of the Range at the event in 2012.
On Tuesday and today, the schools were joined by The King’s School and Sydney Grammar for the annual AAGPS Shooting championships. TAS will be looking to win the premiership outright this year, having been joint-premiers in 2012 with Sydney Boy’s’ High.
All Schools’ placings: 1st SHS 713-54 (possible team score 750), 2nd TAS 709-43, 3rd NEGS 692-30.
