Tweed’s Kelvin Kerkow defeated Leif Selby in a tight match to take this year’s prestigious 2011 men’s Golden Nugget Invitation Prestige Singles at Tweed Heads Bowls Club this week.
Kelvin, who had beaten Sean Baker 25/17 in the semi, stormed through to defeat Selby by the same margin in the final and clinch the title.
It was the fourth time that the bowler they know as “Spike” had won the event and sets him up for possible back to back victories in next year’s event.
If he can do it, he will break a major hoodoo in the sport of bowls – no man in the 25 year history of the event has even been able to back up and win it again the following year.
While the former Commonwealth games bowler won the men’s event, the women’s title went to Jo Edwards who defeated Rebecca Quail – 25/18.
Spokesman for the event, Greg Kelly said the 25th Anniversary event had gone off well.
