Tweed River Jockey Club (TRJC) secretary-manager Rachael Elliott says local racing is set to build on the success of recent meetings as it prepares to host Murwillumbah’s second race day of the calendar year.
“Local trainers have been performing well at our most recent meetings and summer racing has proven very popular with the crowds,” Ms Elliott said.
“You could’ve been at Royal Randwick at our January meeting, the track looked that good.
“More recently, (cyclone) Oswald came and went but the racing surface has recovered very nicely.
“It came back beautifully after the flood, but we’ve had some pretty solid weather go against us in recent days, so we are really looking forward to some blue skies.”
Monday’s meeting (25.02.13) promises to keep the spotlight squarely on the local racing action with a seven race, full TAB program and over $100,000 in prize money, plus BOBS breeding bonuses up for grabs.
It is expected that the Benchmark 70 handicap over 1200m will draw considerable interest, with Brisbane-based trainers increasingly drawn by the prize money on offer south of the border.
Last month’s feature race winner, Union Street, trained at Eagle Farm by Steven O’dea, took out the 2020m Victory Hotel Mooball Cup. An equal favourite on jumping, Union Street came away to win the staying event comfortably, bringing her Murwillumbah record to two wins from two local starts.
