The 2013 Tweed District Junior Closed Championships were played at Tweed Heads Tennis Club over three days on March 8-10.
The annual tournament is an opportunity for junior players from clubs within the Tweed District to play against each other in an age based singles & doubles format ranging from U/10’s to U/18’s.
A total o 150 entries were received with the U/12 Boys singles being the most popular event with 31 entries.
Players ranged from young juniors, aged between 6-10, playing their first tournament through to U/18’s Boys singles winner Blake Kebblewhite, soon heading off to U.S. College tennis.
Among many successful players, standout players were U10 Boys Ethan Horner (Murwillumbah), U12 Girls Saduni Wijeweera (Tweed), U14 Boys Louis Clark (Pottsville) and U16 Boys Aaron Westerlund (Terranora) who were all No1 seeds and won their Singles and Doubles events.
Tournament organisers were very happy with the volume of entries and given the wet weather in the lead up to the event, appreciated only having a bit of light rain during the tournament which didn’t stop play.
Pottsville junior Josh Blackburn (U14 Boys Consol runner-up) said “the Tweed Junior Closed is his favourite tournament because it is a great opportunity to see how you are doing compared to others in your age group in the Tweed District”.
A number of players will be competing again this weekend as the Tweed District Junior Summer Comp Grand Finals are played at Tweed Heads.
