Annual Zone 3 Senior Round Robin
The City club will host the annual zone 3 senior round robin this weekend with two teams from each district playing matches on Saturday starting at 10am and continuing on Sunday morning. At the completion of these matches the zone selectors will select three teams to represent at the state championships at Ballina from May 21 to 23. New England will be represented by the following players, Dave Kliendienst, Russell Johns, Vic Hudson, Jim Williams, John Jackson, Graeme Smith, Claude McFayden and John Hamel.
Meanwhile down the road at Ex-Services the district juniors take to the carpet and in the singles on Saturday at 10am Nick Ellem will play Jack Whitton and Briana Graham faces Justin Bullen. The winners play off in the final. In the pairs on Sunday Nick teams with Briana to play Justin and Jack. It’s really great to see young Briana taking part in her first junior district event and we wish her luck. If family history in anything to go by then she has a good future as her great grandfather, Noel, represented the state in the early sixties.
District Pairs
Due to unforeseen problems my last two reports have not been published so I will back track a little. First up a report on the district pairs played on March 2 and 3. In the final it was a matchup between two father and son combinations when Jake and Glen Graham played Chris and Phil Kliendienst. The Grahams prevailed 22-15 and I believe this is the second year in a row that father and son teams have contested the final. In the senior singles John Andrews will represent at the zone finals following his 31-23 over Vic Hudson at Uralla and Walcha star Brian Lockyer is the reserve singles winner. In the final he beat Robert Rees 31-2.
The state singles final was played at City on Sunday and it was vintage Dave Wilcox won took out the winners badge with a 31-18 win against Dennis Williams. To complete the district events it was another Guyra win in the triples when Chris Kliendienst combined with Braden and Steve Sole to defeat John Mclwain’s team by eight shots.
It’s been a sad week for Myra Smith and her family following the loss of her husband and their father Jock. For Vicki and Chris Brodbeck it has also been sad with the passing of Joy Faulkner. Joy was the wife of Vic who served the City club for many years and her passing will be felt by many people throughout New England. To Myra and all of Joy’s family we offer our deepest sympathy on your sad losses.
