It was super star sightings all round at Casuarina Rugby Stadium this week with the Australian Mens Sevens Squad , “The Aussie Thunderbolts”, in training camp for 4 days.
Rugby nutters Oscar Sims and Wilson Blyth (middle) were lucky enough to get a photo with the full squad early Saturday morning.
Rugby Sevens now has a superstar profile with Rugby Sevens now being added to the Sporting programme of the summer Olympics, in Rio de Janeiro in 2016. As a new Olympic sport, the fast paced, action-packed nature of Rugby Sevens is continuing to grow in popularity across Australia, offering men, women and children the chance to try their hand at the seven-a-side version of Rugby.
In Australian Rugby, Sevens is a proven development pathway with a host of talent coming through to Super Rugby and Test level from the “Aussie Thunderbolts” ranks.
The team had a pool of new players off the back of the hectic HSBC Sevens Series which had the team playing nine events throughout the 2012 season, taking in nine countries and five continents. The players are extremely fit and building on their skill base off the back of tournaments in Dubai as recently as November and South Africa in December 2012.
This week, the lads will head to Hong Kong for the world renowned Hong Kong Sevens on 22-24 March.
They will then be back in camp at Casuarina through April and early June before heading to The 2013 Rugby World Cup Sevens which will take place in Russia from 28-30 June.
