Fresh fields at SportUNE

THE Consett Davis Playing Fields at SportUNE will undergo considerable rehabilitation over the next few months.

The fields will be partially closed with all fields under lights out of action until later in the year. However two fields at the south-western end of the centre will be available.
“The fields have always been well maintained but flooding over the past few years has impacted on the underlying field base,” SportUNE business manager Ashley Clee said.
“This rehabilitation work will result in an improved playing surface and an upgraded drainage system, offering greater opportunity for high level sporting events.”
Preliminary work has started and is expected to take several months, weather permitting, with 300-400 tonnes of topsoil being brought in.
“This area experiences very heavy frosts and requires a grass that will remain green all year round, so the field will be sown with Victorian Ryegrass, a type of grass that will suit our weather conditions,” Ashley said.
While the rehabilitation work takes place the front entrance car park will be out of action, however there is plenty of parking available around the centre, including disabled parking in the south-western carpark.
“We are looking forward to summer sports recommencing and UNE students and staff and the wider community enjoying the benefits of the significantly improved sports fields,” Ashley said.
