THE Surf Toyota Malfunction had great waves for the three day event held at Rainbow Bay earlier this month – a lot of fun was had but the weekend also had a serious side.
Contest organiser Sally Paxton said the event also raised money to help Harrison Bartrim Bryant and his family. A fundraiser for the family is being held at Seagulls on Saturday night.
The Murwillumbah High School student has a rare genetic disorder Cri du Chat which means he is unable to sit walk or talk.
Sally said money raised at the Mal will go towards providing a wheelchair-friendly car for the family.
She said the money raised will be handed over at the main fundraiser to be held on Saturday night at Seagulls from 7pm. Tickets are available from the club, a monster auction will be held on the night as well as the drawing of the raffle which includes a surfboard signed by five world champions.
Sally said this year’s Malfunction – the 30th – was a successful event.
“The standard of surfing was exceptional,” she said.
“The format of everyone surfing three times has proved to be a winning formula with all competitors having a fun social three days and going home with a smile on their faces.
“The Malfunction committee would like to thank everyone for supporting the event and helping throughout the three days.
“A special thanks must go to our sponsors, without them we wouldn’t be here. Over the three days there were five lucky competitors who won new longboards. We hope to see you next year.”
