Fishing on the Tweed

Finally the river is returning to normal after the Christmas season’s hammering. In saying that, it’s been great to see so many people out on various vessels enjoying our wonderful waterway.

I put in the hard yards on Saturday and headed to the shallows around the back of the Tweed Golf Course. This is a great place to hunt for some nice sized flathead and a good tactic is to use a shallow diving, hard bodied lure (an Atomic Hardz); the fish find these things irresistible. Remember flathead are lazy so, even if the lure is a foot away, they’ll just stare at it, but get it running over the top of them and they won’t be able to help themselves, so try fanning your casts in an effort to cover as much ground as possible.

The atomic worked a treat but I also caught fish on plastics, blades and poppers, it’s just a matter of what to use and where. That’s the beauty of carrying four rods, so you don’t have to keep tying stuff on, as it’s all at your fingertips.

Saturday I had a ball, fish everywhere and I kept two legals for the family. Then come Sunday, fishing Terranora Creek, I struggled to get a bite. What gives? That’s fishing for you!

Cheers.
