Cudgen excels at Aussie Titles

Cudgen has excelled at this year’s Australian Surf Life Saving titles held at North Kirra over the weekend, according to club president Adam Mills.
The small team came home ranked 20th out of the 199 clubs at the prestigious titles.
“Our results are by far the best that the club has achieved at an Australian Championship over its 91 year history,” he said.
“The results are a testament to the amount of time and effort that the Cain family has invested in the competition area of the club over the last 10 years and the way that the younger competitors have rallied around the older members of the club to promote the Cudgen Headland SLSC.
“Traditionally we have in the past lost our more accomplished competitors to the more fancied QLD clubs, but in more recent years we have found that we now have competitors wanting to join our club.”
First held in 1915 in heavy seas at Bondi, the Australian Surf Life Saving Championships, now familiarly known as “The Aussies,” have grown into one of the nation’s premier sporting events. Today, almost 100 years on, it remains as a prestigious celebration of lifesaving in all forms of surf competition.
Cudgen Headland Surf Lifesaving Club’s director of surf sports Cheryl Cain is elated with the team’s achievements at this year’s Aussies which was held at North Kirra over the last week.
“A lot of hard work has been put into the club’s competitors with young guns Scott McCartney and Jarrad Cain volunteering their time to coach the younger members; something that is appreciated by all and paying great dividends,” she said.
The competitors have trained very hard all season with some, previously competing at both the NSW and QLD State titles and bringing home medals.  As a club they have had a great season in the competition arena.
“Every competitor excelled.  We had seven under-14 and one under-13 competitor compete up in the under-15 age group and they not only had a great time but came away with some great results. Total number of competitors from under-15s through to opens was 27.  This small team came home ranked 20th out of 199 clubs – an awesome effort,” Cheryl said.
“In the masters competition we had 13 competitors, five of these were our boat crew and the team came home ranked 30th out of 105 teams – another stellar effort,” Cheryl said.
