Saturday evening Murwillumbah Football Club dealt a crushing 8-1 defeat to last year’s premiers, Merrimac in the Gold Coast Premier League Soccer competition.
In a game that MFC dominated from start to finish the victory never looked in doubt. At 2-0, MFC were in cruise control and moving the ball slickly around the park.
MFC’s cause was helped by Merrimac’s lack of discipline, with two players sent off before the break.
Again it was a superb team performance with each player winning the individual battles and getting on top of their opposite number. Goals were shared across the team with two each from Troy Ruthven, Luke Morley and Chris Garside while Simon Hurcombe and Bryce Tory also chipped in with one each.
Joel Saye and Mathew Peate were once again outstanding in defence and never gave Merrimac’s attack a look in. It was a great way to bounce back after the very tough news during the week that one of our standout performers of the season so far, Alex Thelwall, suffered a season-ending knee injury. The club stated ’this one was for you Alex’ and everyone at MFC wishes him all the best and know he will come back better than ever.
Other results: Tweed Utd lost to Surfers Paradise and Kingscliff went down to Magic FC.
