Barbarians win despite discipline problems

The lineout was strong for the Barbarians

The Barbarians maintained their dominance over Albies  on Saturday at UNE’s Bellevue Oval. In bone-chillingly bleak conditions, the Baa-Baas won 22 points to 14. St Albert’s captain, Sam Clements, said that his side delivered their strongest performance against the Barbarians so far this season, but the game just went downhill in the second half.
Despite the victory, Barbarians captain, Sam Piddington, said his side needs to work on discipline. “We gave away too many penalties,” he said.
Standout for the Barbarians was Keith Ellis, who converted his own try in the first half. The only other points scored in that half were a trio of penalties, nailed by Albies’ James Perrett, making the half-time score 9 to 7 in Albies’ favour.
Soon in the second half, the Barbarians’ Keith Ellis again converted his own try.
The Barbarians’ Jared Snooks’ try was converted by Ellis.
Joey Howard scored Albies’ first try, but it went unconverted.
The Barbarians’ discipline issue was demonstrated by two consecutive yellow cards.
Keith Ellis capitalised on a penalty for the Barbarians, claiming the final points of the game.
A second try by Albies’ Jared Snook was disallowed, due to a penalty near halfway and the sideline.
Both sides were well supported, but the conditions kept many in the comfort of their cars. Yet a good number of dedicated supporters were vocal from the grandstand.
