Where the big ones bite

Fishing on the Tweed By David Solano

JOSH Gurnegy Facebooked me to ask about giant trevally fishing, where to look for them and what to catch them with.

Well, as you know, I only use lures and when chasing big GTs I use big, either a popper or a metal slug. When fishing in the river I go for a 25lb leader on the end of 20lb braid. The trick with the popper is to get as much action as possible, really get it splashing. With the slug get it going as fast as you can across the top of the water.
I’ve caught my biggest GTs off the pylons at Jack Evans Boat Harbor, but the biggest GT I’ve seen caught in the river was under the bridge at Barney”s Point and it was a monster GT.
Night time and early mornings seem to produce the most GTs. But the trick is to be patient, expect to be casting lures for hours sometimes, so make sure you take a good mate with you like Josh does as his mate Cody Munroe is a good talker and fisherman. Cheers.
