Bilambil Public School’s netballers are among the best in the State.
Bilambil’s senior girls netball team returned this week from the NSW Primary Schools Sports Association knockout in Sydney as one of the top four teams in NSW.
Coach Karen Jefferies said the achievement was even more impressive considering some schools had a much larger number of students to draw from.
“Coming from a school with less than 300 kids it is a very big achievement and it shows how united little schools can be,” says Mrs Jefferies.
“They definitely left their mark down there.”
The knockout competition saw 528 schools compete in their local areas, their districts and then the regions before the regional winners battled it out at the finals in Sydney.
Bilambil won the quarter-final game but was defeated in the semi-finals.
“They are a talented group of girls,” said Mrs Jefferies.
“Many of them went away two days later to play representative touch football and a lot do high level athletics so they are just a sporty group of girls.”
Mrs Jefferies said the sportsmanship and camaraderie within the team had stood out in the high-level competition.
The school’s relieving principal Matthew Jacobson said Bilambil was ‘bursting with pride’ over the success in the girls netball competition.
“These fantastic young athletes have not ceased to amaze us with their enormous investment of time, effort and dedication,” said Mr Jacobson.
Teacher Julie Stuart and local badged umpire Roslyn Spiller accompanied the team to Sydney and local businesses supported the team with donations to help fund their trip.
