It has been over 25 years since a Tennis NSW sanctioned tournament has been held in Armidale, the last one being run by Max Schaeffer of Uphill and Schaeffer Real Estate.
The inaugural McDonalds Junior and Open Tennis Championships will begin at the Armidale Tennis Club from October 4-6, 2011. Australian Ranking Points are on offer with a “white points tournament” for the 12 & Under and 14 & Under age groups, which will attract talented players from throughout the state.
$4000 prize money is up for grabs, while the 10s, 12s, 14s and 16s will receive trophies and gift vouchers. There is an event for everyone, even the “oldies”, with the Over 35s doubles handicap (Tuesday and Wednesday night after 5pm) and don’t forget a full Junior program.
Thank you to the major sponsors McDonalds and also Precision Motors, Uphill and Schaeffer, New England Mutual, Roberts and Morrow accountants, Tony Williams Machinery. The Whitebull Hotel and Kidsbootz. Max Schaeffer is also kindly donating the two trophies from the original tournament, with winners’ names on it, such as John Newcombe (former world number one) and Kurt Neilson of Denmark. Max is also adding one new trophy to the collection for the tournament.
We will be celebrating the history of tennis with a demonstration match using old wooden rackets, along with novelty matches using jumbo rackets; there’ll also be raffle prizes.
