THE hair was a little greyer and the stories just a little taller but the mateship still remained with members of the 1983 Group 18 representative team got together for their thirty-year reunion at Cudgen Leagues Club on Saturday afternoon.
Players and Group 18 officials came from throughout the shire and around NSW and Queensland to remember the team’s tour of New Zealand.
According to reunion organiser Mick Kennedy the tour marked the first time the local group had ever sent a team away for a tour.
“The team, consisting of players from Cudgen, Bilambil, Tweed Heads Seagulls, Byron Bay, Mullumbimby and three teams from M’bah were selected to tour the Nth Island of New Zealand,” Mick said.
“There were three games scheduled, one in Auckland, one in Rotorua and one in Hamilton. The Hamilton game didn’t eventuate but the other games were victories to Group 18.
“We have had a reunion every 10 yrs and this is the third. There were only a few that didn’t attend.
“It was a very successful and enjoyable day with many memories and exaggerated stories told.”
