New England Bowls

Guyra Carnival

It seems like the gremlins got into things last week and our report did not reach the paper, so here is a brief report on the Guyra carnival.

The composite team of Brian Cullen, Barry Smith, Andrew Moin and Dale Scrivener managed to hold on to win the Guyra fours after an interesting last round.

Going into the round, only three teams had won all four matches played and Brian was drawn against another four game winner in Todd Fuller. Brian managed to win this game, while a real battle was in progress on rink one between the only other four game winner Paul Bullen and Gunnedah’s Ross Grudgefield. Ross led 15-1, only to see Paul’s team fight back to lead 16-15 with one end to play. One down on the head, Paul drew the shot, only to see Ross drive the bowl out of the head for 2 shots to win the game.

The final placings were: Brian Cullen and team 1st; Paul Bullen’s team of Lindsay McIntyre, Mick Pennell and Col Stanley 2nd; Todd Fuller, Chris Kliendienst, Dean Farrell and Braden Sole 3rd; Richie Clutterbuck, Chris Brodbeck, Reg Clutterbuck and Graeme Porter 4th; and Barry Essy, Bob Wymms, Graeme Kennedy and Neil Hawkins 5th.

Congratulations to the Guyra club on an excellent carnival and, despite Saturday’s late rain, the event went off without a hitch.

Glen Innes

It seems the Parramatta Eels match against Newcastle must come before bowls for last year’s district fours winners, as well as the runners-up, as neither team has entered for this event at Glen Innes on February 2 and 3. It looks like outside intervention may be the cause, as it’s not often you see a Manly supporter giving up a game of bowls to watch the Eeels.

One first round match is set down for 9.15am at Glen and this is between teams skipped by Phil Kliendienst from Guyra against Glen’s Rob Rees. The winner of this match takes on Kyle Goodwin’s Walcha four. The remaining afternoon matches are: Les Dawson against Richie Clutterbuck; John Elliott plays Dave Wilcox; and Greg Harrison faces Dennis Williams.
