Two Southern Cross University students will host a surf art exhibition at the Cabarita Surf Life Saving Club, on September 3 and 4, to help protect the graceful mammals of the ocean.
The Paint for a Porpoise exhibition aims to raise awareness and funds for Surfers for Cetaceans, a non-profit organisation committed to conserving and protecting our marine life.
It is being organised by Mia Melamed and Belinda Linton, who are both studying a Diploma of Sport Management (Surfing Studies) at Southern Cross University.
“Paint for a Porpoise has turned from a humble university project into what we are sure will be two amazing evenings full of beautiful art and amazing people, all hoping to help in any way possible to save our marine life,” said Belinda Linton.
“Surfers for Cetaceans is a very deserving organisation whose cause is something every surfer and beachgoer can empathise with,” Ms Linton said.
Leisa O’Brien, whose work will be on display, said she had “ the heart of an artist and the soul of a surfer”.
“I paint out of love for the beautiful environment we live in. It is often taken for granted and we must give back to maintain its existence,” Leisa said.
Doors are open to the public with free entry, donations encouraged. Live music, free platters and discounted drinks will accompany the silent auctioning of local donated art.
“We are excited to raise as many funds as possible for Surfers for Cetaceans, while sharing enchanting local art with the people of Cabarita,” Ms Linton said.
Paint for a Porpoise runs in the Cabarita Surf Life Saving Club, Pandanus Parade, on September 3 and 4. Hours are: Saturday, September 3: 4pm-late and Sunday, September 4: 2pm-7pm.
