Hitting the beach for charity

Instead of taking a break and hitting the beach, Southern Cross University students Michael McComas and Fiona Jones are straight into helping organise A Pinch of Salt, a charity event being held in Currumbin on Friday, December 2 to raise funds and equipment for Surfing Wantoks.
Surfing Wantoks is a not for profit organisation that aims to collect surfing equipment, as well as funds, to be able to distribute equipment and provide surf safety and awareness educational programs to Indigenous com-munities in Australia and the Pacific Islands.
Last year, Surfing Wantoks shipped and distributed a 6.1m container full of surfing equipment to various communities throughout Papua New Guinea.
Graduates of the Diploma of Sports Management (Surfing Studies), McComas and Jones are putting their studies into practice only weeks after their final exams.
“Mick and I completed our major media assignment based around Surfing Wantoks and became so passionate about being involved, that we decided to put our assignment into action,” Fiona Jones said.
By studying subjects such as events, sport business, sport marketing, sport media and sport management principles, Southern Cross University has given these students the first-hand experience they are seeking within the surf industry.
“Southern Cross University has some good links with Surfing Wantoks through its founder Jamo Borthwick, who teaches at the uni, and now through students Fiona and Mick,” Jak Carroll, co-ordinator of the Surfing Studies course said.
“It’s great to see them using the skills learnt during their studies to organise an event such as this.”
A Pinch of Salt will be held from 5pm on Friday, December 2, at D’Arcy Surfboards (1/8 Hawker Street, Currumbin).
Not only will you get the chance to own a rare piece of surf art with 10 per cent from each purchase being donated to Surfing Wantoks, you can also chill out and enjoy live music, with bands including The Surecut Kids.
A Pinch of Salt is an all ages event. Proof of age is required for the purchase of alcohol.
Tickets can be purchased online at www.surfingwantoks.org for $15 or at the door on the night (limited tickets available).
