Back in the early 90s, packed into a smoky Kingscliff Hotel on a sweaty New Year’s Eve, it would have been hard to imagine that 20 years later the place would be exuding style and housing one of the region’s style-leading restaurants.
But this week Babalou restaurant and lounge bar, perched high in the second storey of the historic hotel, celebrated its first birthday in high style – or is that “high tea style”.
Furnished with an eclectic era-crossing array of furniture and boasting panoramic views across to Fingal Headland and beyond, the restaurant has fast become an in-place for breakfast, lunch
and dinner.
And to celebrate its first birthday, the restaurant has introduced a “High Tea Lounge” and “Spanish Dance Night”.
The High Tea Lounge will feature the wares of local cake designer Cupcake&Co, homemade Devonshire tea, finger sandwiches filled with smoked salmon, marinated chicken and fresh greens and complimentary tea and coffee and will be open on Saturday and Mondays (and available at other times on request).
The Tea will complement the existing modern international menu – which includes everything from seafood paella and homemade fungi gnocchi to fresh pretzels and honey dripped donuts.
Inspired by head chef Eddie Uzan, the menu changes with the seasons and is created from locally sourced ingredients.
“I source fresh produce and believe that cooking is an age old
process that takes time, love and patience which in turn creates a meal that the customers want to come back for,” he said.
