Quiet New Year

More than one hundred Police from the Tweed/Byron Local Area Command were deployed across the region on New Year’s Eve.
However police report that the Tweed Heads Sector, which takes in our own Tweed Coast, was extremely quiet with crowd numbers significantly down on previous years.
They said wet conditions may have contributed to the lack of numbers. However large crowd numbers were still experienced in Byron Bay.
While they were busy with crowd issues, police were busy keeping the roads safe.
More than 400 breath tests were carried out in the Tweed/Byron Command on New Years Eve.
However only three drivers detected for drink driving.
But while police see this as a positive sign they say there were still 10 fatal accidents in the Command in 2011, with four of those occurring in December (and two on Christmas morning). Police are pleading with motorists to be patient over the holiday period and drive to the conditions.
If travelling any distance, plan your trip, take the appropriate breaks and enjoy the drive.
