Thirty-one-year-old Dane O’Connor has made a remarkable recovery from cancer, with more than a little help from his friends.
The New England Mutual (NEM) Regional Manager, Armidale Blues player, greyhound trainer and father of three children under five was diagnosed with non-Hodgkins Lymphoma late last year.
That’s when his mates kicked in to help and raised over $12,000 through a special race day at the Armidale Greyhound Course in January to help him meet the extra expenses of treatment. Headed by Armidale McDonalds franchisee Troy Johnson, the appeal team included local rugby players, members of the local business and sporting community and New England Mutual staff.
“It was an immediate response to help Dane and his wife and children through this really tough period,” said Community Mutual Group CEO Kevin Dupé.
“Everyone who knew him wanted to do something to make it a bit easier to get through the eight rounds of chemotherapy which really took their toll. It’s great to see he is now in remission and back at work with his friends and supporters.”
Mr Johnson said he and Dane shared an interest in greyhound racing and other sports, which sparked the idea of the special race day. He paid special tribute to Armidale Greyhound Club President Gary Carson and for and Armidale Ex-Services Club CEO Bob Ryan for their strong support for the event and the Armidale Blues for raising and impressive $2500.
O’Connor is a stalwart of the Armidale Blues, captained 2nd Grade, coached the Under 13s and was Club Treasurer for five years.
“I’m now in remission, which is the best news you can get,” he said.
“The money made such a difference to meet the additional expenses associated with the treatment. That really cut out a lot of stress. My wife Ellie and I are very grateful to all those who contributed. It has been amazing.”
