TWEED Heads roller skating rink, Epic Skate, is set to play host this weekend to an exciting double header of roller derby, when it hosts the second round of North Coast Derby Coalition series starring local roller derby club, Tweed Valley Rollers.
This action-packed game features a ‘home’ bout advantage for Tweed Valley Rollers (Tweed Heads) and The Bay Rollers (from Byron Bay), who are up against challengers from Yamba and Coffs Harbour respectively.
The Tweed Valley Rollers are preparing for the game off the back of a spectacular win over rivals Coffs Coast Derby Dolls in Byron Bay last month where the local girls defeated the North Coast competitors 228 to 205.
While the roots of the sport are planted firmly in Austin, Texas, roller derby has become one of the fastest growing women’s sport in the world, not only for its dynamic appeal but also its subcultural influences and community spirit.
The number of Australian Roller Derby leagues that have emerged since the sport’s US-led resurgence in 2004, is numbering well over 70 nationwide, and locally, the North Coast Derby Coalition (NCDC) brings together teams from Tweed Heads, Coffs Harbour, Lismore, Yamba and Byron in regular bouts to showcase the sport.
