New England Bowls With Richie Clutterbuck
NO luck for the Ex-Services men’s number seven pennant teams in the zone finals at Inverell East last weekend.
In their first match against Bingara, they failed to get a good start and lost the match 47-62 with Don Faulkner’s four the only rink winners.
Needing to rebound in the afternoon match against South Tamworth to stay in the race they again lost but only by three shots. This loss and Lighting Ridge’s win meant that they were out of contention for state honours.
Sunday’s rain caused matches to be cancelled and as the Ridge were unbeatable they were declared winners. They now join their number one team in the state finals.
Zone juniors
JUSTIN Bullen and Jack Whitton very nearly made it a double in the zone juniors as they narrowly went down in the fours by just one shot in the final. Earlier they had won the pars and looked a good chance to take out the double as they were joined by Nick Ellem and Breanna Graham in the fours. Needing a three on the last end they could only manage two, but it was a great effort and best wishes to Jack and Justin for the state finals. Well done to Paul Bullen who has taken over the running of the zone juniors after the retirement of Terry Farrell.
John Oxley triples on
WALCHA will host their annual John Oxley triples this weekend and no doubt they have a full field as the event is very popular. The City club is calling for entries in their annual major/minor two bowls airs carnival on 25 and 26 July and the event is open to men’s, mixed or ladies teams. Clubs have been sent details and hopefully the carnival will receive support.
I will not have a column next week as I have to travel to Toowoomba for the interstate match between NSW and Queensland and hopefully I will be able to boast about the state of origin.
