It’s not cheap to feed a pet these days, but imagine if you have to feed more than 400 animals a year!
That’s the task for the Friends of the Pound who had 214 cats and 211 dogs in care last year and managed to find homes for 179 of the felines and 199 canines.
So, when a local business decided to give them a helping hand, collecting all sorts of food, toys and equipment as part of a Christmas appeal, the Friends volunteers were only too happy to accept.
First National Real Estate at Pottsville and South Tweed held a Christmas tree appeal – collecting all sorts of goodies from customers, friends and family for the dogs and cats.
“We usually do a Christmas Lights competition,” First National Sales Manager Ben Charlton said.
“But, with the onset of increased electricity prices, we thought it might be time to try something different.
“A lot of our clients are very pet conscious, so we thought we’d try this.”
The company had trees up at both their Tweed and Pottsville premises during the Christmas/New Year period.
“We had a great response,” Ben said.
“We had a lot of people bringing in donations – everyone thought it was a great idea.”
The food, toys and accessories were handed over late last week at Pottsville, to Friends of the Pound president Sonia Trichter who said Friends of the Pound were grateful for the help and support of Ben and his staff and everyone in the community who donated.
“We are only a small group, all volunteers,” she said, adding that the donations would come in very handy.
“These ladies do an awesome job for the homeless pets of the Tweed and it was nice to be able to give something back,” Ben said.
