Work has begun on the $600,000 project to update the Marine Parade Streetscape between Turnock and Seaview Streets in Kingscliff.
Council workers began putting up signs on Friday in preparation for the project, which got underway on Monday and Tuesday of this week. Construction work was due to start next Monday, however, the contractor became available a week earlier than expected.
It is expected that the work will be completed within 10-12 weeks.
The project will see Marine Parade become one-way for south-bound traffic between Turnock and Seaview Streets.
The project is also aimed at providing additional car parking by using the reduced carriageway width as well as realigning the road to discourage speeding and then beautifying the street, with trees being planted in the pedestrian walkways and islands.
The plan for the street was formulated follotwing the community consultation process for the proposed Kingscliff Central Park back in 2011.
The process revealed that Tweed Shire residents believed there was a lack of parking in Marine Parade.
The one-way design was developed in conjunction with the Chamber of Commerce and aims to provide additional car parking, while providing a safe and inviting environment to do business and engage with the local community.
Trees will be planted to replace existing pot plants, to create natural shade for pedestrians and a more vibrant streetscape which reinforces Kingscliff’s coastal village character.
