New resident of the Barney Street Homes North Community Housing complex, Moira Messner, is pleased as punch with her new unit and is looking forward to a sense of community that will come with living in the new residential complex.
The Barney Street complex was officially opened last Friday at a BBQ by the Hon Scot MacDonald, Member of the Legislative Council. Other dignitaries included Member for New England Tony Windsor, Member for Northern Tablelands Richard Torbay and Armidale Mayor Peter Ducat.
The units have been constructed by Housing NSW under the Nation Building Economic Stimulus Plan. Residents like Moira have been allocated units and have settled into their new homes.
The development consists of 29 units, 23×1-bedroom units and 6×2-bedroom units and have been specifically designed to accommodate older residents or residents with mobility issues.
There is a lift to access the first storey and seven units are suitable for residents using wheelchairs.
The site was specifically chosen for its close proximity to the CBD as well as its convenience to the Armidale Hospital and associated medical services.
The units have been allocated to people over the age of 45 and to people with a disability.
Moira Messner who lives in one of the 2-bedroom units has found her new unit to have everything that she could ever need.
“It’s wonderful, it’s very spacious, plenty of storage, very secure and very warm through the winter months,” said Moira.
The Barney Street complex was opposed by many residents in the surrounding area but Moira believes that most of the residents in the complex just want the quiet life.
