Artists capture erosion

Kingscliff’s erosion has been captured in vivid colour and black and white as students from the town’s new art school, Kingscliff Arts, turned their attention to the coastline.
Teacher Gillian Grove said the beach erosion proved the perfect subject for students looking to capture their surroundings.
Students from Kingscliff Arts captured the recent erosion in their latest classes when they headed down to the Kingscliff foreshore for a drawing lesson with local art teacher Gillian Grove.
“I was looking for a way for students to practise drawing from life and decided to take the group down to the Kingscliff foreshore,” she said.
“It was a beautiful sunny morning and we worked using charcoal and large sheets of card to create the artworks. The results were nothing short of fantastic and really highlight the devastation to the landscape along the foreshore.”
The students spent the morning studying the Kingscliff landscape, drawing the local trees, ocean, rock wall and general landscape. Gillian said what emerged was a snapshot in time, capturing the devastating erosion that has occurred in Kingscliff.
In addition to the changes that have occurred in the landscape at Kingscliff, the artworks also reveal changes in how far the students have come in learning to draw, with their art skills clearly evident in the artworks created.
“The students were in week seven of our 10-week drawing skills course. Many of them had not done a lot of drawing previously and used the morning to practise some of the drawing techniques we had been learning. I think everyone’s confidence was boosted that morning. This group will move on to learning how to paint next term. I can’t wait to see what they produce next!”
One of the students, Robyn Halliday, will use her Kingscliff drawing to enter in her first art show to be held in Robina in mid-October.
“We are lucky to live in a community that is so supportive of the arts where many artists live and derive an income from their hobbies. I hope to support as many people as possible to enjoy the art through our classes and workshops. We can teach anyone to draw or paint, you don’t need to have any previous experience or talent.”
Kingscliff Arts opened its doors recently, holding art classes for both children and adults. Anyone can come along to learn how to paint and draw, with specialised art workshops in other creative pursuits such as printmaking and the crafts.
After filling all classes in its opening term, Gillian has expanded the classes to ensure the community can access classes at a range of times to suit, running day, night and weekend classes. Kingscliff Arts is now taking enrolments for classes starting October 10. Call Gillian on 0411317606 for further information.
