Cudgen strikes back as mate remembered

It was a case of third-time lucky as Cudgen fourth grade cricket team defeated the gang the Kingscliff Firebrigade at Kingscliff on Sunday afternoon in the third annual “Packy Cup”.
But while the Cudgen players enjoyed finally getting their hands on the cup – it was more about having fun, raising money and remembering a mate.
Andrew “Packy” Turnbull, a member of both organisations and father of seven, collapsed and died after fighting fires at Fingal in October 2010, but he has not been forgotten.
Every year his friends and family get together to play cricket and raise money for a local charity with his mother Gwen working hard to get plenty of raffle prizes to raise money for a worthy cause (chosen by the two groups).
The event is usually held on Australia Day, but rain this year forced the match’s postponement until last weekend.
The 20-20 game this year ended in a one-run victory to the Cudgen Cricket team – their first victory and all money raised will go to the Children’s Burn Unit.
